Following our first successful collaboration, FMCC, EHfC and the European Academy Berlin joined forces again last autumn to further explore the political responsibility of artists and cultural workers in shaping the future of Europe.

The Artist as Citizen 2024 Konferenz

In Berlin, our conference ‘Freedom, Culture, Citizenship and the changing role of the Artist in the staccato society – A European Perspective: The Artist as Citizen’ brought together artists, curators, directors, journalists and academics from various European countries, disciplines and backgrounds who would not normally have the opportunity to meet. They provided a myriad of innovative and inspiring examples from their own practice as drivers of active citizenship, while addressing the following urgent questions:

  • What is the role, responsibility and ambition of artists and cultural workers active in the public space?
  • How do they contribute to European citizenship?
  • How can we strengthen synergies within the cultural sector in order to give it a new dynamism, maximise its operational results, enhance its political influence and open a dialogue with other domains and European citizens?
  • What instruments can the EU and the member states develop to integrate the European House for Culture and its activities such as the Artist as Citizen programme into their policy measures?
  • How can the contribution of the cultural world become more visible and be effectively considered in the decision-making process at local up to European level?
